Running vs jogging  

These exercises offer great health benefits to us. We engage in these two activities in order to improve our aerobic system. A sedentary lifestyle reduces our lifespan and is linked to chronic diseases such as hypertension. 

Jogging requires us to maintain a consistent pace all through the work out. It also ensures that we do not put too much pressure on our bodies. It provides an amazing starting point for individuals  who wish to start exercising and building a healthy lifestyle. 

There are however several differences between these exercises that we will highlight within this blog. We will also discuss the benefits of these exercises. 

Key differences between running and jogging 

Pace

Running utilizes a high amount of energy compared to jogging. This is due to the increased pace which forces our bodies to work harder. A fast face leads to a caloric deficiency making it a great exercise for weight loss. Runners usually train to compete. 

Jogging on the other hand  uses minimal energy due to its slow pace. This is why we are able to run longer distances when jogging. Joggers engage in this activity for fun and not for competition. 

Runners also have a set pace and defined target. This exercise is usually more structured compared to jogging. Due to the fast pace of involved in running, runners are susceptible to injuries.  

Jogging is the safest way to exercise while avoiding injury. This is because jogging has a less demanding nature and does not overwork the muscles. We should first start with jogging if we know that we are not fit and scale up slowly to running. Both have a great impact on our health.

Form

Proper running form involves keeping our head in an upright position  and our eyes focused ahead. This helps relieve the neck and spine from stress. We should also keep our shoulders down and back. This is because rounding of the shoulders reduces our pace. 

We should also make a pumping movement in our arms consistently  in order  to improve our momentum in a race. The lower body also plays a key role in maintaining a good form  when we run. Our knees should stay in lime with our toes. Landing on a mid foot proves beneficial to us as it pushes us forward  and helps us stay on our feet. 

Running requires a higher level of fitness compared to jogging. When we want to begin running, it is important that we build our overall fitness first to avoid injury. 

Running also utilizes several muscles at a time such as the hamstring and quadriceps. When our legs move towards the front and back, the upper body muscles and core are activated to aid in maintaining balance. 

Joggers do not have a strict form as they are usually done for fun. It is widely argued that runners have a much better form compared to joggers. 

Jogging on the other hand when done consistently pushes the muscles to grow stronger due to the long duration of exercises. 

While running our arms swing a lot  and your knees almost come up to your chest. Jogging however consists of slow bouncy movements. The technique for both of these exercises engage similar muscles making jogging a full body work out. 

Physical exertion 

Jogging is a less intense workout compared to running. Its slow pace  is usually comfortable and we are able to do it for longer because it does not put too much stress on our muscles. 

Running is however a medium to high intensity workout compared to running and ends up activating the lactate threshold. Running because of its increased intensity helps to boost our metabolic rate , a function that we cannot achieve through jogging. 

Because of its high physical exertion, running is not an activity for all age groups. Jogging is however an inclusive workout. Both the old and young can involve themselves in jogging. 

It is important to ensure that even when we want to cross our personal best pace, we remember to ensure that we are safe and exercise appropriately.
